Bruce farmed Juniper Flats near Maupin until 1930 when he moved to Heppner. There he worked as a carpenter. After the death of his wife, Vera, in 1972, he moved to The Dalles in 1975. While living in Heppner, he was known as "The Carpenter". He was also a good ameteur gunsmith and an avid collector of Indian Artifacts.
