Notes for James Bothwell
James Bothwell, his brother, William, and their wives, Ruth and Dinah, were founding members of the Albany Congreational Church and leaders in the petition drive that separated their congregation from the First Presbyterian Church in Albany, of which they were members. William was made a deacon at the formation of the church in 1842, James was elected to a five year term as a trustee of the church in 1844 and on 12 July, 1846, was elected to a three-year term as deacon.

Research notes for James Bothwell
The 1840 Census shows five members of the James Bothwell family in Burlington: 2 males, one in the 20-30 age range and the other in the 30-40. This fits James and Jeremiah. Jeremiah was born around 1819 and James was definitely older. Also listed were three females, one each in the 10-15, 20-30, and 30-40 range.
The age groups for the women is slightly problematic. The oldest of the three seems likely to be James’ wife, Ruth, whom hemarried in May of 1839. She would fit the census listing for a female in the 30-40 age group as she was born arount 1806.
The other two were most likely Sarah, who would fit the listing in the 20-30 age group as she was born around 1814. The third is listed in the 15-20 age bracket, but the only unaccounted for member of the family was Jeremiah’s twin sister, Margaret, whose most likely birth date was around 1819.
.
Since Jeremiah and Margaret were born in about 1819, it is pissible that he was listed in the 20-30 age group where he belonged, while Margaret may have been listed in the 15-20 bracket to make her appear younger.
In later censuses, she sometimes claimed to be born around 1824.
That accounts for all but William and his wife, who we know were in East CAN in May of 1840 because of their daughter's birth and thus probably missed being counted in the census. I'm convinced that they had kin somewhere up in East CAN.
Notes for Ruth Converse
In the 1850 census, she was living next door to the family of Amasa P. Converse in Medina, Lenawee Co., MI.
Amasa and his brother, Benjamin, were born in Belchertown, MA, Ben on 10/29/1813, family moved to Northhampton in 1819. Ben went to Mich. 1834 to claim gvt. land, later joined by Amasa.
