The census of 1861 says he was a Woodsayer (Journeyman).

He was a miller like his father - till he was about 50 and then made violins in Aberdeen. - From his obituary

Christening date from IGI and OPR - make birthdate from 1861 census wrong.

According to William M. Alexander's "The Place Names of Aberdeenshire" (Third Spalding Club, 1953) it is from an old Gaelic word "rath", meaning a fort or enclosure.
Rothie Norman is a small town about 4 miles SW of Fyvie and 22 miles NW of Aberdeen. From Alexander: "Locally, Rothie Norman is nearly always called simple "Rothie". The early mentions show the lands of Rothie in the hands of two feudal owners, Norman and Brisbane. Hence comes Rothie Norman, which applies to the district and village, and Rothie Brisbane, which applies to a farm."

Alexander Bothwell, Violin Maker Died 4th May - aged 94 years
Mr. Bothwelll was born in Rothienorman, where his father was a miller. He assisted his father during his early years in the mill, and followed the same trade till about 50 years of age. For long he had practised violin making as a hobby, and exentualy set up a business on Bridge Street. He made a large number of violins in his time, most of them of good quality, and highly spoken of, and several of consideral value. Besides making fiddles he did a large business in repairing. He was also a practical musician, and in this respect was able to test all of his instruments. He retired from business in 1898, when he occupied premises in Netherkirkgate. He was predeceased by his wife some years ago, and is survived by three sons and two daughters.
