Notes for Will Gile
The following is taken from the "Guile-Gile-Guiles Genealogy", by John Charles Gile. "Research in England" The GILE-GYLE-GUYLE-GILDE-GUILDE Family in co. Su ffolk, England. "I have conducted much research to see if the origins of the family in England could be determined. In charles Burleigh's Genealogy an d History of the Guild, Guile, Gile family (1887), under the Introduction on p. 15, is is stated - "It has been pretty conclusively ascertained that the major ity, it not all, of the immigrants with whom our ancestors are found to have be en in company upon their arrival, were from the counties of Norfolk and Suffolk in England; and it is hardly probable that these three, very young persons, sh ould have ocme from some other distant locality, but rather that they were in s ome way related to some of the company, and came under their protection, especi ally as in after years, in giving names to their children, we find them approp riating those which were peculiar to certain of these families." There was als o much discussion in this section, on possible Scottish roots. Other researche rs have suggested roots in co. Wiltshire; Channel Islands; Holland and France. The ages used in that and earlier family histories were estimates based on whe n they were married, as stated in the BurleighIntroduction. Aside from that, I found the statement in the above quotation to be accurate; and the other sugge stions unsupported. The International Genealogical Index (IGI), developed since Burleigh's time, was searched for records in england and Scotland fro th e time frame of the family. The results could not support a Scottish origin. Studies of all counties in England resulted in the highest likelihood centered in East Anglia. Examinations of teh volumes of Wills from the Archedeaconry of Suffolk, (NEHGS 1986), showed several mentions of the name under related spell ings. Richard guilde was a witness in Dec. 1620; Thomas Gyle and John Guyle n amed in land descriptions; a will of edward Guile of Barking; but of most parti cular interest was the will (#85) of Margery Gilde of Ilketshall St. margaret, widow, 24 january 1628/9, naming 2 sons John and Samuel as beneficiaries, with "Admon. to John Gild with power reserved for Samuel Gyld." In addition, Percival Boyd's Marriage Index, 1538-1837, for Suffolk showed a pattern of entr ies beginning with the marriage of Will Gile & Rose Flatman at Ilketshall St. M argaret, Suffolk, in 1542. Prior to 1538, regular records do not exist - it wa s in that year that Thomas Cromwell ordered all parishes to keep regissters of christenings, marriages and burials. After much further study and corresp ondence, I decided to retain a researcher in England and Dr. Joanna Martin, AGR A, of Ipswich, England, was selected on the referral from the Center of East An glia Studies, University of East Anglia in Norwich. Over the past few years, t he records still existant were searched, including original parish registers in all the parishes, and Hundreds ( a county division), where the name was shown. parish records showed baptisms for 4 children to Will Gile and his wife Rose Flatman, and subsequent parish records, wills, land and manor records supplied further information on these Gyle/guyle families in that and surrounding areas, down to the baptism of Richard Gyle in Westhall 30 June 1576 and the baptisms of the children of Richard Gilde who married margery Jordan, whose will is desc ribed above. the records of the Duke of Norfolk in Norwich were also searched for Richard's will and land records, but nothing was found. The family ma y have come originally from co. Norfolk, where others of the name are recorded, possibly when the Duke of Norfolk was given the Ilketshall lands after the dis solution of church properties in 1537. It is my conclusion tht John and Samuel Gilde named in the will of Margery Gilde are probably the same two who arrived in new England in 1636. it has been reporte
