Enlisted Jan. 12, 1900 in the 46th Company, Imperial Yeomanry, at Belfast.

Sergeant Major, 46th Company, 12th Battalion, Imperial Yeomanry. Served in South Africa during the 2nd Anglo Boer War 1899-1902. He was secretary to Lieutenant James Craig, who later on became deputy to Lord Edward Carson and later still the first Prime Minister of Northern Ireland as Lord Craigavon. He was captured and held prisoner by the Boers at Lindley in the Transvaal. He survived the war and went home to Belfast, Northern Ireland, but returned soon after to South Africa and was stationed at Stellenbosch, Cape Province. Just before returning to South Africa was a founding member, along with James Craig, of what became The North Irish Horse (Yeomanry Regiment), many who were initially recruited had been members of the Imperial Yeomanry in the Boer War. He died unmarried aged 27 years on 20 Jan 1903 (not 1909 as shown on his grave) of enteric fever and pneumonia at No 1 General Hospital, Wynberg, Cape Town and was buried in Constantia cemetery.
