Research notes for William Bothwell
Per the 1820 Census, William Jr's household consisted of a male>45 (William Jr.), a female 26-45, a boy10-16 and a girl <10. It appears that William Jr was living with brother George during the 1830 and
1840 Censuses. The woman and children are not present in George's household and there is no evidence other than the 1820 Census that Wm Jr had a family.
Per the 1850 Census, William Jr was a 75 year old, illiterate, pauper, laborer living in the household of Reuben McFarland at Northumberland, Coos, NH. Back in Oakham, MA the Bothwell and the McFarland families were closely associated. Rebeccah McFarland married John Bothwell Jr who was Williams first cousin. Rebeccah was the granddaughter of Duncan McFarland who succeeded Alexander Bothwell in 1726 as Marshall of the newly formed town of Rutland, MA. The family relationship apparantely extended back to Ardstraw Parish, County Tyrone, Ireland from whence both families reportedly emigrated.
An article on p.304, Vol 130 of the Journal of New England History and Genealogy (NEHG Register),
Oct 1976 notes the move of Duncan McFarland's progeny toNorthumberland, NH and Lunenberg, VT. These towns and Guilford, VT have continguous boundaries. I am sure the movement of the Bothwells
and the McFarlands to this same area had been the basis for much discussion back in Oakham and it is understandable that the younger McFarlands would take in poor old William Jr in his hour of need. By 1850 most of William's close kin were dead or had gone to Michigan or Indiana.
