Notes for James Augustus Bothwell
Twin of Jane.
On Oct. 9, 1875, James A. took over the homestead claim of Henry Brown for the E 1/2 SW 1/4 Section 22, Glengary Township, Fillmore Co., Neb. He received the deed Aug. 20, 1881. (Source: Milligan Centennial Book; Bureau of Land Management records. Homestead Certificate 4337, Application 7841 ).

In 1888, he was in Strang, NE. A letter to his sister, dated Oct. 4, 1888, was written on paper with a printed letterhead listing him as an agent for the Phenix Insurance Co. of Brooklyn. Another letter from Strang, dated Sept. 3, 1888, is written on letterhead identifying him as a notary public and operator of a Land, Loan and Insurance Office “special attention given to collections and farm loans” and a subscriber to the directory of American Land Agents.

A letter to his twin sister, Jane, dated (with a rubber stamp) May 8, 1895 was written on the letterhead of the German Bank in Bruning, NE. The letterhead listed Frank Bruning as President, Samuel Fitzsimons as Vice President, and J.A. Bothwell as Cashier. Another letter to Jane was written (date also rubber stamped) March 11, 1901, was also on German Bank stationery, though less elaborate and without a list of officers. The only embelishments to the letter head were the notations that paid up capital was $10,000 and the surplus was $5,000 (first digit not clear on my copy so it could have been another number but it appeared to be a 5).

In 1906, he was the two-term County Treasurer for Thayer County and was a candidate for the nomination of the Republican Party for Nebraska State Treasurer. He finished 5th of 5 candidates on the first ballot.

In December, 1908, James A. Bothwell et al and W. W. Glasgow received a grant deed from M. Ritz for 22.52 acres in Jackson Co., Ore. in township 38.

In 1910 he was a manager at Albert H. Beach Co., 251 S. Broadway in the real estate loan department. (LAT 7/29/1910 classified ad). That address is now a wedding chapel.

In the 1910 and 1920 census records, James A. and family are shown living in Los Angeles Co., CA.

In 1911,he is listed in the Jackson Co. directory list of taxpayers in Medford, Ore.

In 1912, advertising in LA Times Classified to sell land in Oregon.

In 1914, he had changed to the Harry H. Culver Co. and was selling property in Culver City.

In 1915, lived at 811 Mariposa Ave., Los Angeles.
