Notes for Sarah Marinda Bates
Sarah and her family moved from CAN to the area around Lowell (then called Andover), NY. In 1840, Sarah, Ann, and George traveled west to Illinois via land and by a Great Lakes boat. Sarah and Ann remained in Illinois where they married, but George returned to Lowell where he married Saphronia Babcock, who died in Aug. 1851. He then married Almira Loomis. They farmed in Dix, NY, and cared for his mother, who died June 4, 1854.149

ln 1880 Federal Census, Sarah, 60, was living with her son, James A., in Filmore Co., Glengary Precinct, Nebraska, with Frank Sieber & a family from Bohemia. She filed for the homestead cancelled by her son, Jeremiah, on Nov. 26, 1872, and, after declaring her intent to become a citizen of the United States, received her deed Aug. 20, 1881. Homestead Certificate 4005, Application 6951. Although divorced, she listed herself as a widow on the census.

Sarah died at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Jennie and William Andrew Bratney, in Hastings, NE.

Notes for Benjamin Franklin (Child 1)
Benjamin and his brother, Jeremiah W., left Illinois May 1, 1871, headed West. Their mother, Sarah, received letters from them from Nebraska. Benjamin’s letter was postmarked in Osceola on May 12 and was received on May 20. Jeremiah’s was postmarked May 15 in Omaha and arrived May 20.149

He enlisted in the US Army Nov. 9, 1867, served in the 16th Infantry, was discharged in Huntsville, AL, Nov. 9, 1870, as a private.

According to the Milligan Centennial Book, Benjamin F. Bothwell settled in Glengary Township, Fillmore Co., NE and filed a homestead claim May 29, 1871 on the NW 1/4 of section 22, Glengary Twp.

According to the records in the Bureau of Land Management, he cancelled the homestead claim on March 16, 1875, and then turned around and took out a Timber Culture Act claim on the same land on June 21, 1875. He received his deed (Timber CultureCertificate No. 39) on March 10, 1884 and sold the farm March 15, 1884, to Valentine Steinacher.

In addition to farming, because of crop failures and pests, Benjamin taught school in Districts 43 and 44 from 1879 to 1881. Salary was $25 per month.

In 1881 he was named Sexton of the Glengary Cemetery Society (later known as the Bohemian National Cemetary or the Milligan South Cemetery.)

In 1882 he was appointed Glengary Postmaster (for 2 years) running the post office from his farm. Was postmaster in 86

Later he ran a general merchandise store in Ohiowa and in the 1890s he ran a hotel.

Reportedly, he moved to Lincoln, NE sometime in the 1890s.

In the 1920 Census, he is shown living alone in Enterprise, Ore., but is buried in Lincoln, Neb.

Wm. Bratney has a letter written to Benjamin by his brother, Jeremiah W., on July 16, 1920.149
Military notes for Benjamin Franklin (Child 1)

Notes for Jeremiah Wesley (Child 3)
Jeremiah and his brother, Benjamin, left Illinois May 1, 1871, headed West. Their mother, Sarah, received letters from them from Nebraska. Benjamin’s letter was postmarked in Osceola on May 12 and was received on May 20. Jeremiah’s was postmarked May 15 in Omaha and arrived May 20.149

According to the Milligan Nebraska Centennial Book, published in 1988, Jeremiah filed a homestead claim (Application 5661) on Sept. 4, 1871, on 80 acres in the W 1/2 SE 1/4 Section 22 of Glengary Township, Fillmore Co., NE and gave it up on Nov. 18, 1872. It was taken over by his mother, Sarah Bates Bothwell.

In Oct., 1871, Jeremiah was back in Clinton, IA., where he married Marium Fralich on Oct. 5. They apparently settled in Sterling, Whiteside Co., where he worked in the Sterling Coffin Factory.

On March 8, 1885, he wrote to his mother and noted that he “quit the coffin business soon after I was out there and took charge of a furniture factory” in Burlington, IA. In another letter, dated May 10, 1892, his letterhead identified him as “J.W. Bothwell, dealer in Groceries and Provisions, Queensware, etc. in Ottumwa, IA.149

In 1888, he was in Strang, NE. A letter to his sister, dated Oct. 4, 1888, was written on paper with a printed letterhead listing him as an agent for the Phenix Insurance Co. of Brooklyn. Another letter from Strang, dated Sept. 3, 1888, is written on letterhead identifying him as a notary public and operator of a Land, Loan and Insurance Office “special attention given to collections and farm loans” and a subscriber to the directory of American Land Agents.

A letter to his twin sister, Jane, dated (with a rubber stamp) May 8, 1895 was written on the letterhead of the German Bank in Bruning, NE. The letterhead listed Frank Bruning as President, Samuel Fitzsimons as Vice President, and J.A. Bothwell as Cashier. Another letter to Jane was written (date also rubber stamped) March 11, 1901, was also on German Bank stationery, though less elaborate and without a list of officers. The only embelishments to the letter head were the notations that paid up capital was $10,000 and the surplus was $5,000 (first digit not clear on my copy so it could have been another number but it appeared to be a 5).

In 1906, he was the two-term County Treasurer for Thayer County and was a candidate for the nomination of the Republican Party for Nebraska State Treasurer. He finished 5th of 5 candidates on the first ballot.

In December, 1908, James A. Bothwell et al and W. W. Glasgow received a grant deed from M. Ritz for 22.52 acres in Jackson Co., Ore. in township 38.
