Notes for Benjamin Franklin Bothwell
Benjamin and his brother, Jeremiah W., left Illinois May 1, 1871, headed West. Their mother, Sarah, received letters from them from Nebraska. Benjamin’s letter was postmarked in Osceola on May 12 and was received on May 20. Jeremiah’s was postmarked May 15 in Omaha and arrived May 20.
149He enlisted in the US Army Nov. 9, 1867, served in the 16th Infantry, was discharged in Huntsville, AL, Nov. 9, 1870, as a private.
According to the Milligan Centennial Book, Benjamin F. Bothwell settled in Glengary Township, Fillmore Co., NE and filed a homestead claim May 29, 1871 on the NW 1/4 of section 22, Glengary Twp.
According to the records in the Bureau of Land Management, he cancelled the homestead claim on March 16, 1875, and then turned around and took out a Timber Culture Act claim on the same land on June 21, 1875. He received his deed (Timber CultureCertificate No. 39) on March 10, 1884 and sold the farm March 15, 1884, to Valentine Steinacher.
In addition to farming, because of crop failures and pests, Benjamin taught school in Districts 43 and 44 from 1879 to 1881. Salary was $25 per month.
In 1881 he was named Sexton of the Glengary Cemetery Society (later known as the Bohemian National Cemetary or the Milligan South Cemetery.)
In 1882 he was appointed Glengary Postmaster (for 2 years) running the post office from his farm. Was postmaster in 86
Later he ran a general merchandise store in Ohiowa and in the 1890s he ran a hotel.
Reportedly, he moved to Lincoln, NE sometime in the 1890s.
In the 1920 Census, he is shown living alone in Enterprise, Ore., but is buried in Lincoln, Neb.
Wm. Bratney has a letter written to Benjamin by his brother, Jeremiah W., on July 16, 1920.
