According to a biography compiled by his son, Wilbur Russell Brown, Wilbur joined the Sells Bros. circus for a season as a roustabout at age 16 or 17, around 1893 or 1894. In 1893 he went to work for Sam Beard at New Vienna, OH for about two years, then worked a year with his uncle, John Quincy Brown, as a stone mason. Next he did farm work for Lode Harris in Eaton, OH, for about a year before getting a job with a telephone crew building a line from Eaton to Boston, IN. Stayed with the telephone company for a number of years, going to Lincoln, NE, in 1902 where he married Martha Curtis Bothwell in 1905. Later worked as a motorman and a lineman for the Lincoln Traction Co., then the Citizen’s Railway before moving to a homestead on Crazy Woman, WY in 1916 and then into Buffalo proper in 1921.
