At the first meeting of the Durham town council on July 24, 1845, John Bothwell was named Mayor and James Bothwell was Secretary-Treasurer. In 1853, Durham township was divided into two municipalities, No. 1 and No. 2. No. 2 was named the Village of L’Avenir and James Bothwell was elected its first Secretary-Treasurer on Oct. 15, 1853.
